Chad Gauthier

Long Take

Drawing reference from French new wave cinema, Late For Everything’s paintings function as altered mnemonic devices that interrogate and rework the original act before the camera. By taking a cinematic approach to painting, the artist’s hand plays a role in the translation of the photographic image into a more personal gesture, using these fragmented pieces together in a composition that directly references the once familiar. Using the silent and stillness these film stills act as a reflective moment, allowing us to appreciate the ephemeral figures in a liminal state of being and unbeing.

Chad Gauthier is a contemporary painter whose figurative and atmospheric paintings reflect his interests in French new wave cinema and its playful way of storytelling. Gauthier received his BFA from OCAD University in 2015, and has since been working closely with Project Gallery out of his studio in the east end of Toronto.
